Ratings for the new James Bond: Casino Royale are through the roof. Every review site on the internet is hailing it as the best Bond movie yet. I love James Bond, but I HATED Casino Royale.

This post has a bit of spoilers (not too bad though), so if you haven’t seen it yet… don’t. And if you have seen it, don’t see it again.
They killed every aspect of James that made him, well, Bond. When I think James Bond, I think girls, cars, gadgets, and a charming smoothness that make guys watching want to be exactly like him. Let’s analyze these in order. First girls… I’m not going to talk about this one in too much detail for fear of my girlfriend slapping me, but they casted ONE girl in the whole movie that attempted to tackle this bullet point. The second aspect of James Bond is cars. Granted he drove an Aston Martin DB9 Sport, which is a gorgeous car, and in one scene he jumps into the car in hot pursuit of the bad guy, and you expect a wild, explosive, Bond-like car chase. However to my dismay, that scene only lasts 20 seconds and the car is absolutely destroyed. Kinda sad for a car enthusiast. Next in line is gadgets. In Casino Royale there quite simply are no gadgets. There’s a cell phone with GPS and a GPS tracking bug… that’s about it. Impressive. Finally is Bond’s famous charm. In Casino Royale, he simply doesn’t have any. He’s egotistical and arrogant. He couldn’t care less about other people, and is completely sappy near the end. At one part my friend turned to me and asked “Is this James Bond, or a chick-flick?”
And another thing, Daniel Craig does not look the part of a smooth super-spy. Throughout the entire movie, that kept nagging at me in the back of my mind… he doesn’t look the part. Absolutely horrible casting.
This movie has tried to reinvent James Bond, but they’ve destroyed him. If they had not slapped the “James Bond” brand on it, and instead made a completely different movie, with a new name… it wouldn’t have been half bad. However they instead tried to expand on an existing image, and they ruined what was a good series. It almost seems like they made a separate movie, realized it was slightly similar, so they went back and changed a few parts so they could call it James Bond.
One example of how they’ve destroyed James Bond, was a scene where they asked him if he wanted his martini shaken or stirred… to which he replied “Do I look like I give a damn?”. I’m sorry… but James Bond would NEVER say that. He’s always polite, charming, and smooth…. not rough and a jerk, like he came off in this movie. I could go on ranting, but I think I’ve said enough. If you’re a James Bond fan, and you enjoyed this movie, can you PLEASE enlighten me as to why? Because as of now, I think that was the absolute worst James Bond movie I’ve ever seen… and I’d even go as far as saying it’s one of my least favorite movies overall.
Quite sad, really.

He’s always polite, charming, and smooth…. not rough and a jerk, like he came off in this movie
This is the hole point of the movie. Bond has never been polite, charming and smooth until this movie. All other Bonds follow afterwards as Casine Royale is the remake of the first movie. Therefore we learn in Casino Royale why he almost never has any relationships to women, why he likes to wear nice suits etc.
Before this movie Bond is not the Bond we know - He becomes the Bond we know.
March 6th, 2007 at 7:12 am
OH! So Casino Royale takes place before the others? That would make since with him just getting promoted.
Wow, I totally missed that.
I still didn’t like it though. :p
March 9th, 2007 at 1:36 pm
If you want another view/version of Casino Royal with David Niven - http://imdb.com/title/tt0061452/ this is a 1967 spoof of James Bond….
After watching it, re-think the Austin Power movies and how much Mike Meyers stole from this original classic comedy!
March 13th, 2007 at 4:22 pm
Do you really think Bond is usually so much more charming and smooth in the other Bond movies? I’m a fan of James Bond movies, but seriously, some lines and dialogues are a lot worse than in Casino Royale. I mean compare Casino Royale to Moonraker or Daniel Craig to Timothy Dalton. Also, the sappiness factor… inone Bond movie with George Lazenby he actually marries, but the girl tragically dies like five minutes after the wedding.
March 19th, 2007 at 12:36 am
Now I am not one to jump on other people for their opinions. It’s part of what makes us human, but for god sakes, did you even do any research before you went and saw (or rented) the movie? I mean come on, they even said this was not going to be anything like you have seen before. It’s about damn time they attempted to reinvent the franchise after 40+ years.
If you have never read the book Casino Royale, then I suggest you do. Ian Flemming started Bond as exactly what Craig portrays him as in the movie, and very well I might add. And if you have never watched any of the other movies, Bond is arrogant, but in his own way. He is the best, and he knows it. And for clarification, there are 2 women, but only one had a point. And thank god there were no gadgets. It is fun to see the things only able to be seen in movies, but damnit, brute strength was so needed over gadgets in regards to a reinvention.
I will end with this: 1) This is the best Bond movie in years but still no one compares to Sean Connery; 2) this is the first time in years I have left a movie feeling satisfied that I spent $10 on a movie (next to the 300 movie, which was awesome); and 3) 2007 is shaping up to be better than 2006 in every way possible.
March 19th, 2007 at 12:42 am
Travis,
I understand what you’re saying, but certain things, like gadgets, I feel are important to the James Bond vibe. That’s him.
Now granted, when I saw this movie, I did not know it was a prequel to the rest, and looking back that makes a lot more sense.
Regardless, I was personally disappointed in it, but that’s probably because I went in expecting something completely different.
And on a side-note, you mentioned 300… I really do want to see that. I’ve heard great reviews. I’ll most likely make a post about that afterwards as well.
Regards,
- Harry

I just came from digg looking at your great ajax tutorial and noticed you had a James Bond review and felt like adding my two sense into the pot as well. I don’t have much to say really, basically I’m sorry you didn’t like the movie, I found it to be quite good. Actually went to the theaters to see it again. I went in knowing it was a prequel, and I had my doubts at the end of it at first. But it continued to grow on me the more I thought about it (mainly since it was so unlike bond) but it won me over in the end. Maybe he didn’t have his gadgets, but he did have a beautiful leading lady, it’s just to bad she had to die.
March 19th, 2007 at 2:54 am
The one thing that they missed was the car scene. The Aston Martin was amazing, don’t get me wrong, but it lasted a whole 15 seconds. This movie is not for the car enthusiast. I just can’t get that by without enjoying the movie. That is all.
March 20th, 2007 at 6:48 am
You said it - absolutely rubbish. I walked out after an hour - a whole hour.
BTW, love the Ajax tutorials. Found your site looking up PHP curl stuff.

I am THE Bond Fan. I have all the movies on DVD, including Casino Royale. If your look at Casino Royale as the next Bond Movie you are obviously going to dislike the movie, because James Bond himself is not “more bond” than he was in Die Another Day, but it not suppossed to be the next Bond….its supposed to be the first. The reason that they waited until now to film the movie is that they just got the rights.
It was very different that the other movies in the series, but helps make the series as a whole a better series. Casino Royale adds a fourth demension to Bond. Instead of a Car Chase they had an amazing Parkour/free walking chase and instead of a cool and in control Bond who always wins, Casino Royale makes Bond the character more realistic in that he was not always the greatest.
I liked the movie and look forward to next Bond.
P.S. I found your site today and like it a lot. Its got nice graphic, WordPress powered, and great content! Your are definitely going to be added to my bookmark bar.

The reason that James Bond is so different in this movie is because this is his first mission as a 00. The James Bond you know is the experienced, smooth, calm and charming Bond because he has been around the block a few times. This Bond is just a beginner.
Casino Royale presents a more realisitc Bond with more human qualities. He relies on his wit rather than fancy gadgets and a fancy car. Daniel Craig played an amazing James Bond and they chose the right man for the job. All those who believe that Daniel Craig was a terrible James Bond and that Casino Royale was a terrible movie obviously have no idea what you are talking about because this is the beginning of James Bond not the James Bond after Die Another Day. Of course he’s different!! He is just starting. His experiences in this movie lead up to creating the James Bond you know and love. Get your information right before you start criticising.
March 29th, 2007 at 2:09 am
keevon,
Notice in the comments above that I misunderstood this was a prequel to the other James Bonds. When I saw the movie, I thought it was the same Bond, but Hollywood trying to “reinvent” him. I’m relieved to find out I was wrong.
Thanks for your feedback however.

Thanks for replying to me. I feel bad about some of the things I said in my last comment. I am just kind of defensive of this movie because it is one of my favorite movies and I feel bad about what people put Daniel Craig through when he was cast as James Bond.

I am one of those bond fans who has all the movies even Casino Royal now, even though it was the WORST Bond movie ever it a good non-Bond movie. People say it was based before Dr. No but the problem with that is it is based in ‘06 not before ‘62 when Dr. No came out. If it was supposed to be the first Bond it should have been based before ‘62 not in present. The way it’s based in the present and supposed to be kinda like before Dr.No they basically said forget all about Bond we’re starting over and doing what we want. And to some who mentioned that people should read the book, from what I know thay made casino royal just like book before when they thought they bought rights to when they just had rights to name, but not too long ago on tv I saw the casino royal that came out in 60s and the British gov. people were asking him to come out of retirment. It was kinda stupid so both the casino royals can’t be based on the book. And at part when was a scene where they asked him if he was asked if he wanted his martini shaken or stirred, that should have NEVER been asked. Bond HAS to order a”martini shaken not stirred” — it’s the Bond drink. I liked it as a normal movie but it was by far WORST bond movie ever even though I used to thing George Lazenby couldn,t act and that he discraced the Bond name he has moved up on the ladder and the “wounderful”(said sarcastically) Daniel Craig took his place. And something intersting I noticed the new Casino Royal is the only Bond movie that at the top says Daniel Craig as Ian Fleming’s James Bond and as some people say this movie is based exactly on the book ,not trying to be rude, but if that’s true Ian Fleming is a horrible writer.
May 14th, 2007 at 11:21 pm
Wow Austin, you’re an idiot.
Casino Royale doesn’t take place before Dr. No. It’s a complete series reboot. After the absolutely terrible abomination that was Die Another Day, they needed to get back to a darker, grittier style or risk having the franchise die. Craig perfectly potrays Ian Fleming’s James Bond. If you want to know who the worst Bond is, look no further than Roger Moore, who turned a series of dark, realistic spy stories into 007’s whacky adventures.
Harry, I’m glad they didn’t have a ton of gadgets in this film. By Die Another Day, they’d practically turned Bond into inspector gadget for cryin’ out loud.
Also, for the whole gadgets thing, let’s look at a film that is often cited as one of the best in the series, From Russia With Love. How many gadgets are in that film?
Another point replying to Austin; Bond isn’t the only guy ever who has his martinis shaken. There are two ways to mix a martini. Shaken and stirred. Shaken gives a colder martini while stirred gives a stronger one. In fact, it’s a nice joke for Bond fans that in this instance, he doesn’t yet care.
Craig is an excellent Bond, right up there with Dalton and Connery.

I´m James Bond fan from Finland and I watched all twenty previous James Bond movies one month ago. I enjoyed those ones. Now I bought that new Casino Royal James Bond -dvd and I have tried to watch it but it seems to be very difficult because it’s so slow- and heavy tempo movie. I feel myself very sleepy when I try to watch it, that never happend before while watching James Bond movies.
Albert Broccoli often said that most difficult and most important thing is to take care that nobody don’t damage James Bond format but now it’s happened after his death. In Casino Royale there’s no difference with boaring tv-serie. When movie started I thought, have I really bought James Bond movie, so poor was black and white beginning, that really wasnt what I have been used to wait for Bond movies. And music, James Bond movies are famous about exciting music themes but that new one, there’s no music what you can call Bond music, that was elevator music. Where is famous James Bond humour and now I´m talking about Bond movies because I haven’t read any of Bond books.
Daniel Graig is not strong in his role as James Bond. He is so far that style what Terence Young created with Sean. Criminals (bad guys) are not anyway personals like before. That movie you really can’t call traditional James Bond movie and I really wonder what was happened to Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli ? Are they any more intrested about James Bond format?
July 7th, 2007 at 8:03 pm
Totally agreed, plus it must be said that the everything sounds just a bit too much Mission Impossible: the parkour chase for instance, I mean, why should the terrorist climb the crane if he just wanted to reach the embassy, that is really pointless???
Plus, the poker scenes are so odd and, in the last hand, everything is so clear…

I love James Bond’s movie because of the cars he is using on his films. Like what he used in Casino Royale the Aston Martin DB9. I really like that car a lot.

I love watching James Bond’s movie and I like Pierce Brosnan as James Bond. He is so manly, tough, sexy, and really gorgeous man. That’s why when I learned that the Casino Royale will not be Pierce Brosnan I’m a little bit disappointed and sad but I told myself maybe its time to switch to another hollywood actor that might be more suitable or add another flavor in the James Bond’s character. After watching the Casino Royale, I may say I’m not that satisfied with the movie. Maybe because I was expecting too much and compared it to the last Bond’s movies. Well, I never expected it anyway that it will turn to be like that, ’cause of what James Bond sticked to our mind. On every James Bond movie, i’m really excited on the cars that he will use plus the gadgets inside it. So when I saw the Aston Martin DB9 on the movie Casino Royale, it made me blush like a little girl and my mouth just said one word “WOW!”. Ever since, I’ve wanted that car. So somehow the Casino Royale made a little difference in my life.

I just want to say that james bond is always sexy. true in this movie he was rougher around the edges but to me that just added to his appeal. he wasnt always smooth, he was arrogant, he was once vunerable and betrayed, then he learned his lessons and became BOND. the imperfect bondish past just adds a new facet. i did miss the gadgets though. and the longer car chases.
i liked the chase to the embassy, how bond found much easier ways to follow the gymnist terrorist.

This movie s a prequel to all other Bonds. It reveals how he becamse the spy we have known to love.
- He orders a rum and coke in one scene, before he realizes he loves martinis.
- The first scene is before he has become a Double 0 Agent
- The scene where he kills the guy in the bathroom is not perfect, it’s rough, as would anyone’s kill be when you first start killing people
- He falls in love, and she dies, explaining why he’s so callous to all women.
- He drives a Ford Focus, then finds the Aston Martin to be a much better vehicle
- That’s why the end of the movie line is “Bond, James Bond”. Because we know he’s on his way to becoming the spy we love.
- All in all, he’s not perfect. That’s the fun of the movie. We see him evolve into 007. This is James Bond at his nittiest and grittiest, and it’s perfect.
Hope this helps!
